This Unit comprises of 2 parts, White Balance and Studio Work
LIGHTING - Unit 3- Part 1 - White Balance
UNIT 3 LIGHTING - Task 1. Take 2 sets of shots with all the presets -
Shoot 1 Scene outdoors in daylight
Shoot 2 Scene Indoors, with only artificial light
I took the following shots in the afternoon outside in my garden. I used a Nikon D700 using a 28 - 200 mm lens and camera strap, with 8gb sandisk memory card. I used different WB settings to show color balance. Auto, Incandescent, fluorescent, Direct Sunlight, Flash, Cloudy and shade. I found this assignment interesting, and liked that I could make a outdoor scene more richer or warmer depending on whether you are inside or out just by changing the white balance. For safety I used my camera strap, and made sure the area was clear of any other objects.

LIGHTING - Unit 3- Part 2 - Studio Work
1.1 Assess lighting sources for photography: The photos below were shot in the class studio, and we used different forms of lighting sources from Flash which is sharp and casts shadows to a soft box which spreads the light making it more and subject softer in appearance which also includes back lighting, front lighting, side lighting and overhead lighting.
2.1 Identify light metering techniques for light sources and subjects: Bottom photos where taken in class learning how to use a meter to produce correct exposure for a photo. The bottoms are examples in progression from not using a meter to using one, and how it helps get a better photo.
3.1 Use lighting sources to photograph subjects to meet identified goals: I took a series of the same photograph, of my bicycle upside down in my garden. I used natural light along with changing the WB to alter the tone of the photograph, which I loved to see richer, warmer and colder.
3.2 Assess lighting photography: I had a lot of fun and really enjoyed working in the studio, with different subjects. We used a black backdrop and also a white backdrop, taking photos left side of face, front face and differing lighting sources I preferred the black backdrop using flash and box lighting together. I found that using a white background with light created unappealing shadows.
4.1 Identify and use safe working practices in lighting for photography: Working in a Photographic Studio can be a confined and there are many instruments that can be hazardous if not careful. Before working, make sure to tidy any equipment not in use and that the walkways and work spaces are not blocked by equipment, or boxes that should be put away. Beware of lighting as these can get extremely hot, use a heat glove when having to move the light to prevents from hurting yourself. Avoid electrical fires by making sure your equipment is plugged in and unplugged in a safe manner and that any wires are not damaged or frayed.
